JOYEN performing at the New York Asian Burlesque Extravaganza // Photo by Green Bag Photography

Rarely in a designer’s life would we’ve met a woman who embodies all their guiltiest, kinkiest, dirtiest design pleasures – you know, those pieces in your mind the nuns from your catholic high school would expel you for even thinking about?  That’s why I could say out loud I’m hella lucky to have met Joyen. The Royal Robe of Wonderland

This very detailed trumpet gown is inspired by the Queen of Hearts. The idea was to design a gown for the Wonderland Royalty (The Queen of Hearts or the Red Queen) showing my own personal style. It had been a grueling two months of cutting, layouting, machine and hand-sewing, and finally, beading and applique to come up with it. This is my most elaborate personal work to date. It’s been a part of a group exhibit, under Gallery Nine in MANILART 2016. Read more about our participation here.

Alice in Madnessland!

Never have I imagined myself being an exhibitor in Manilart. Ever. Maybe because its all about “artworks” – the term I’d normally associate with paintings, sculptures, installations, and similar things that would fall under the category. There is after all, a fine line between “art” and “fashion design” – even “couture” or “avant garde” if you may. Yes, it’s true. We were one of the exhibitors for this year’s Manilart (such honor, woo!) Here’s a little preview of the next write-up we’re brewing (it’s tough brewing those lately, especially with all the gowns we need to give birth to!) More to come soon.

Thank you for the screen time! We are definitely thrilled for next year, as the Madtinkers of Gallery Nine comes up with another out-of-this-world show.

There’s always a first time to everything, and gods – for the life of me (and this dress!), this has been a wonderful one. Slipping on mossy rocks, breaking your favorite bracelet and the realization that those spiky little things that you just accidentally stepped on were now dead snails aside, this buwis-buhay (life-risking) photo shoot was so worth it.

ANACHRONISM

“Anachronism” or born in the wrong era: It was my good friend’s tumblr url. I asked her if I can use it to name this collection, and she said yes. It just sounded fascinating at the time. In a way, the overall message I was trying to achieve with these five pieces was having a feeling that the clothes didn’t really belong in the modern times (or the present). Continue reading
